Cottesloe Morning Shoot

April 7th, 2008

Neal and I were planning to go out on a shoot at Cottesloe Beach last night but plans changed so we headed out there this morning for sunrise instead. Dylan Fox came along, too, so I finally got to meet him.

The sunrise wasn’t anything special but I think we all still managed to get a few nice shots. You can see one of mine from this morning above. It is a 7 shot panorama, each frame at 5 seconds. I played around with the colours a bit in Photoshop and added a motion blur to the sky (one tip I learned from Christian at his course).

Christian Fletcher is holding another photography course on the 19th of April starting at 7:30pm. Read more here. It is well worth the money if you are into landscape photography, no matter what experience level you are at.

I’m working on another image from this morning at the moment and will put it up later if it turns out nice.

Thanks for stopping by.

man you guys are fast at processing your pics … I have yet to even download to the computer …. But did have a heavy work day so I had an excuse … Nicely done Beau … Cottelsoe beach is such a tricky place to photograph, I must of been there now 3 or 4 times looking for where to take a pic from still none the wiser.

looking better already Beau, nice pic mate and the motion blur works well. The light is excellent, what focal length are you shooting with, is it fairly wide? The building looks a bit bubbly. If your not already doing it use a 50mm or more and this cuts out any distortion. All you need to do then is step back a little from the scene to get it in, or take more shots!!

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Christian, the focal length I used was 21mm. I didn’t notice the building was distorted until I got home and loaded the photos onto my PC.

I only have the 17-40 F4 so 40mm is the highest I can go but I will try to use 40mm next time and see how we go. I borrowed Neal’s 50mm 1.4 over the weekend and found that 50mm was too much zoom on a 1.6x crop camera.

I’m planning on buying the full frame 5D soon.. Just waiting for a good deal to pop up.

Wish I could shoot through the week in the morning.

Nice exposure on the whole shot.

I noticed the bend in the building first, but Christian already pointed that out.

If you use your lens on about 35mm thats close to 50mm on a crop sensor.

Hi Beau

Like this shot with the clouds adding to it. How do you find your Nodal Ninja. I have been thinking of buying one. All the best John
